September Update

September update and AD applications...

AREA DIRECTOR APPLICATIONS OPEN
Applications are now being accepted for the 2021 Area Director vacancies. Two positions are open, with the expiration of the terms currently held by Joel Pogar and Jeff Penney. Because the high school football season was moved to the Spring of 2021, the new ADs will assist and train through that season and then assume the AD position on June 1, 2021. The terms will end on December 31, 2023. Being an Area Director takes a lot of time and energy so please consider how the role fits in with all other aspects of your life before applying. The schedule for electing new Area Directors is:

  • Tues Sept 1 – Applications available
  • Wed Sept 16 – Application deadline
  • Wed Sept 23 – Video meeting for speeches to membership – recorded and available for later viewing
  • Fri Sept 25 – Voting begins
  • Thurs Oct 8 – Voting ends
  • Fri Oct 9 – Results announced

APPLICATION IS HERE

Please contact a current Area Director with any questions.

CFOA BOARD MEETING
There was a brief meeting of the CFOA Board of Directors on Saturday.  The only real business at hand was formally passing a motion to retain the current Area Directors into 2021.  That motion was passed.  The traditional winter meeting in December was postponed until January.  No other business was conducted.

FALL YOUTH AND CLUB FOOTBALL OPPORTUNITIES
Please remember that although we may pass on information about football officiating opportunities for this Fall, all 2020 football leagues are not sponsored or sanctioned by CHSAA. CHSAA does permit high school players to play in club leagues. As an independent contractor, it is entirely up to you whether you officiate any football games this Fall. CHSAA, CFOA and DFOA have no role in coordinating, supervising or assigning these games.  In addition, your NFHS insurance is only valid for CHSAA sanctioned events.

SPRING 2021 DFOA AREA MEETING DATES/TIMES
Please add the following Area Meeting dates and times to your calendar now so you have them:

  • Tues Feb 2, 6-8:30 PM
  • Wed Feb 17, 7-8:30 PM
  • Sat Feb 27, 9 AM – 12 PM (on field)
  • Tue Mar 2, 7-8:30 PM
  • Wed Mar 17, 7-8:30 PM
  • Tue Apr 6, 7-8:30 PM
  • Wed Apr 21, 7-8:30 PM

We are planning on having all of the meetings at Englewood HS. The DFOA website calendar will be updated with these dates in December.

RULES AND MECHANICS TESTS REMAIN OPEN
If you have not done so, you are encouraged to complete the online testing now so that you have it out of the way and are good to go in the Spring. This is particularly true if you officiate a winter sport since the CHSAA B and C seasons will be back-to-back.

MENTORS NEEDED
We have 26 great new officials who completed classes last Saturday and are very excited to officiate football in March. Having a mentor as a resource to answer questions and provide information and experience is crucial to success as a new official. The mentorship program will be fairly informal with scheduled opportunities at most Area Meetings for mentors to meet with mentees. If you have at least four (4) years of  high school football officiating experience and are willing to mentor a new official, please email John Conklin at [email protected]
